Mmmm. Peculiar to read all these rules when used to the way earlier authors just took a story and used it. I'm thinking for example of Laxdæla Saga, which someone pointed out a while ago is the Sigurð/Brynhild story transposed to Iceland (and focused on the Brynhild character). Who knows how many of the original listeners "got it". It's still a thumping good yarn, with deep lessons.
