Heh. I saw someone write an interesting essay about how someone was discussing a family-disliked girlfriend; when asked if the woman was black (because it was a common cause of familial dislike) the response is "no, she's normal", at which point the respondent was clearly horrified by the words that had just come out of their mouth.

I sympathized - the person didn't intend to say something like that, and that's the point... thinking "white = normal" was a nasty thought to that person, but there was still that unexpected mental association.

If you don't try to think about other-than-white-dudes (in US culture - it's different in other places), you are already falling prey to some unconscious prejudices. It's one reason I loved the term "consciousness raising" - become conscious of things, *think* about them.
