I don't know what the rich want, but I do know one change I've seen in myself as I've changed over the years from broke student to reasonably comfortable retired person - I am MORE willing to pay, and pay promptly for good service, like the guy who fixes the toilet and cleans the roof gutters. I used to argue over bills because I had so little money I couldn't afford an overcharge. Now, I am so glad I don't have to worry about nickels and dimes. I can't imagine being that rich, and I think if I was, I would be glad to throw money at people who made my life easier.
I think that the reluctance to pay is one of those things attributed to the nouveau riche, a derogatory term applied to people who are just jerks (i.e, "old money" people included). The ones I've known who stayed rich were simply careful, such as buying a good used car instead of a flashy new sports car, taking public transit instead of cabs all the time, being satisfied with "enough" instead of finding the biggest, fanciest home (or whatever). And they paid their damn bills on time, with civil queries as necessary for questionable items.
Damn, I had a point, and now it eludes me. Er. Yeah, those silly people in that article are just, well, silly.
