That was weird. And I think it illustrates one of the things that can make it easy for a person to do this. I would bet that he let himself do things like that because he was sure they weren't a big deal. I'm not saying that it's impossible that he was just a total asshole in this area, and didn't know/didn't care if it was a big deal. But a quick ass-grab strikes me as the kind of thing that would be easy to excuse to one's self, and assume will be forgotten.
And I also think that essay is great because it shows that it won't be forgotten, and a great precautionary tale. "Don't do this thing you think won't be remembered, and thus won't matter. It will - and you're *lucky* if you later learn how broad its effects were. If you're unlucky, you never get to realize how badly you screwed the proverbial pooch."
