I don’t like the Retro Hugos; they tend to reward the embarrassing early efforts of people who later got a lot better. But this problem is least in the Best Novel award, and this year we are voting on the works of 1943, so, as John Hertz reminds us, we get to vote for one of the best sf novels ever: Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game.
