Perhaps a heavy-handed sf satirist, trying to create a dystopia combining the worst of free enterprise and the state, might have imagined the grotesque idea of turning the prisons over to private companies. She might then have imagined a War on Some Drugs to support the industry. But could she have been sick enough to dream up a plot twist where the prisons sued the government for not arresting enough people?

Clay Shirky on why healthcare.gov didn't work (besides the heroic efforts of the Republicans and the insurance industry). Hagbard Celine also had some thoughts on what happens when the planners are supposed to know everything and the workers are supposed to know nothing.
