There's this complete and absolute difference between the sexes that is so natural and hard-wired that we have to keep enforcing it and shaming those 5-year-old criminals who don't go along with it. It might be a serious problem if that meant the kid was going to turn gay, which it doesn't, and there was something wrong with that, which there isn't.

The past or subjunctive (counterfactual) of the auxiliary verb may is might. If you say "she may have" done something and then make clear that she didn't, you force literate readers to go back and figure out what you were trying to say.
