About 30 years ago, I was a newspaper reporter covering a speech by a gay rights activist who was speaking about portrayals of gay and lesbian people in the media. They were full of errors, she said. Why? "Because the media tells lies about all of us." By that she meant gay and straight, black and white, young and old, you and me. Pregnant women and new moms, too.
It was one of those utterances of starlight-bright wisdom that more people should have heard because it would make their lives better. I reported it, but not everyone in the world read my article, alas.
Yet there is the irony that the media (me) was calling out the media as liars.
