I find it very hard to view Rotten Tomatoes as the bad guy here. Movie theaters are ridiculously expensive and they now tend to be little claustrophobic boxes that require a long drive to get to. I honestly don't know where the closest one here is; the two I grew up patronizing have both closed, the one that wasn't architecturally distinguished after being chopped into a multi-screen theater, and there's little I would want to see that mainstream theaters show anyway. Our local film reviewer does well what I value US film reviewers for: he brings an encyclopedic knowledge of film to bear and is quite funny when he's nasty. Here's this week's moderate pan. And here's last week's demolition of the Transformers flick, which influences my response to the article: if Rotten Tomatoes saves a bunch of people from wasting an hour's wages per person, good.
