I realize I am in a minority here, but for me Frank Herbert’s books divide into the ones he should have hired someone to novelize and the ones where he needn’t have bothered. A brief five-book retrospective includes three of the former: Destination Void, The Santaroga Barrier (with all the Existentialist words, Gilbert Dasein investigating the jaspers), and Whipping Star. Surprisingly, it omits the beloved Dragon in the Sea, which I consider definitely in the second group. Damon Knight complained about spaceship books that we’d consider mundane if they took place in a submarine. Dragon in the Sea is like that, except that it really does take place in a submarine.
