I worry (and write) about the tragedy of the commons. [personal profile] blatherskite picked it up and has some useful thoughts

Although I have not yet read it, I am eagerly looking forward to Rebecca Solnit's A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster. [profile] 19crows gave it to me because she has heard me talking about how I believe Detroit and New Orleans are the important places in the U.S. now. One thing I believe about the tragedy of the commons is that disaster places it more firmly in people's minds, and one reason we are so far away from protecting our commons is that it has been so long since the U.S. or Western Europe has had a real disaster.

It is a painful thing to wish or hope for disaster; fortunately, it comes whether one wishes it or not.
