Discrimination

The word discriminate has two opposite meanings: to distinguish badly (racial discrimination) and to distinguish well (discriminating tastes). Public schools of course should refrain from the bad kind, but one essential function is to discriminate well.

Teacher Strikes

While one arm of the resistance is students with an understandable disinclination to be massacred, their teachers are also rising up. I’m with Bernie: Medicare for all and education for all.

Making Teacher Cry

The continuing farce of pretending the schools can make people equal, giving tests to measure that goal (see Goodhart's law ), judging teachers by the results they obtain, and telling them not to “teach for the test” (which is either the old Mission: Impossible trick or a stunning inability to understand human nature) brings us a Great Moment in Emotional Manipulation.

Severely Gifted

I used to think the schools should treat excessive IQ as a disability, but now I figure they'd just mainstream us. (I still think some children should be diagnosed with "Intellectual Curiosity Disorder" so they can get an IEP with lots of reading.) Here's an article about the severely gifted.
