    <content type="html">They always told me that however I dressed, I was Making a Statement. For instance, if I did not meet standards of neatness, I was showing contempt for the people or the venue, and I would be judged by my Statement. There's a part of me that still resents that, but these days I go along with the gag. There is, after all, a lot of truth in "the meaning of your communication is the response you get."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you do an all-male anthology or &lt;a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/nov/05/women-writers-excluded-books-of-the-year"&gt;Top 10 list&lt;/a&gt;, you are Making a Statement. If you really believe that the only worthy examples were by persons of the penile persuasion, go with it, but don't be surprised or indignant if you're judged by your statement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img src="https://www.dreamwidth.org/tools/commentcount?user=supergee&amp;ditemid=149382" width="30" height="12" alt="comment count unavailable" style="vertical-align: middle;"/&gt; comments</content>
