There’s no place like Chrome

Apparently, Firefox has a bug that makes it even less trustworthy than the Net usually is, so I have installed Chrome and am using it for the duration, with redoing passwords and other fun stuff. The continuing saga of computers becoming the sort of thing I want to use computers to deal with.

The title tells it

The Internet of Garbage
Here’s an interesting thought from it:
Harassment doesn’t happen because the Internet is “too big”— it happens because it’s too small. Part of this has to do with thoughtless user interface design. When it comes to Twitter, an @-reply feels offensive because it “invades” your online space; it’s a message delivered straight to your face because the Twitter user interface is designed to make @-replies visible.

Comments

Newspaper stops running comments on its Web site because
Our comments are a raging cesspool filled with the worst that humanity has to offer and you all make us look bad by smearing your feculent mindpoops on our property, so do it somewhere else and we’ll pick the ones we like to highlight.

Smoosh

Thought-provoking article about the decline of Twitter. It starts with Walter J. Ong’s theory of orality, which is a good place to start.

Jonathan Swift was right

For some reason Firefox has decided to approach the network named after shit-flinging monkeys with a firm grip on its own ankles, and it no longer defaults to Google for searches. Fortunately, we have a computer self-defense professional in the household, and he will fix it.

ETA: I figured out how to switch it back myself, but I'm still pissed off.
