Gendered reading

Once again, I have fallen behind the times. Last I heard, the official word was that sf is for boys and fantasy is for girls. But the Newspaper of Record is cooking up new and better flavors of Teh Stoopid back behind the paywall, and now we learn that fantasy is likewise too laden with boy cooties for the ladies, apparently because of too little of the Relationship stuff that is all they are interested in.

Three, count 'em three, women reply:

1. Annalee Newitz (Thanx to [livejournal.com profile] mariness)

2. Mari Ness herself

3. Pandarus (thanx to [personal profile] onyxlynx)

Back in MY day, fantasy was all ladies swearing sister-oaths to each other and then setting forth and beating holy hell out of rapists. WHAT CHANGED, MAN

(Yeah, I read a lot of Mercedes Lackey in high school. :-D)

Did you read the 'Sword and Sorceress' series of anthologies, edited by Zimmer Bradley? I grew up on that stuff! Good times, man, good times!
