It's kind of rare that I'm surprised by something, but this I am surprised by. I didn't know that women's magazines were recommending choking as a fun sex game, or that it was becoming a widespread defense against murder charges.
I don't want to just say this is horrifying -- it's more complicated than that. One of the many reasons I find this horrifying is because it feeds into the idea that anything kinky is the same as murderous deviancy. But another, bigger reason is that it's another, growing excuse for men to kill women. Meep. So I guess I'll circle back to, this is horrifying.
IIRC, there are ways to get similar physical effects without the risks. Apparantly mild asphyxiation during sex is a pleasurable thing for some people. And there are sexual positions which can have that effect, without e.g. the risk of someone's hands tightening too far at orgasm. (This comes from something I read long ago; it's not something I have experience with.)
