An anthropologist with the charming name of Hortense Powdermaker turned the condescending eye of her profession on the sort of savage, primitive tribe that deserved it. The book was called Hollywood, the Dream Factory. Her subjects retain that sort of charming simplicity; for instance, they believe that no movie centered around Asian-American women could possibly succeed. But The Joy Luck Club did.

In a little over a year, the British Tories have twice taken careful aim at their own foot with elections they didn’t need to call and twice scored bull’s eyes.
